EXPECTED OUTCOMES
National Biodiversity Information System
Development of the first integrated, national Biodiversity Information System in Greece, that fully exploits all latest related technologies.
The system:
- will provide data to all interested parties via classified access rules and
- will be operated and maintained by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA).
National Biodiversity Database
A comprehensive national biodiversity database will be developed within the new Biodiversity Information System. Data included will come from:
- existing validated biodiversity databases,
- related LIFE projects,
- related research programmes deliverables,
- Management Units of Protected AreasNGOs and various other actors.
Training
More than 100 employees of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) and the Management Units of the Natura 2000 Network, as well as more than 100 employees of the Ministry of Environment & Energy (MEE), will be trained on the operation of the Biodiversity Information System.
A bilingual guide (Greek & English) for biodiversity management and monitoring in Greece, based on the new Biodiversity Information System, will be developed and used for training purposes.
National Biodiversity Indicators
Νational set of biodiversity indicators that will include both traditional indicators as well as Earth Observation ones (consensus with all relevant actors).
Earth Observation Data Cubes & advanced network of remote ground sensors for enriched biodiversity information in 2 pilot areas
Acquisition of data relevant to biodiversity through innovative approaches and enriched information extraction at multiple scales.
Development of Earth Observation data cubes (EO data cubes) in the two pilot areas of LIFE EL-BIOS:
- Northern Pindus National Park (11 Natura 2000 sites) and
- Kotychi Strofylia Wetlands National Park (5 Natura 2000 sites)
that will facilitate access and extraction of ongoing information from dense satellite images of the EU Copernicus program.
Additionally, LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data will be collected and analyzed through terrestrial and airborne (UAV) platforms.
Furthermore, a network of in-situ wireless sensors for the real-time recording of biotic/abiotic environmental indicators will be developed in the area of Northern Pindus National Park (Valia Kalda).
Dissemination & Awareness
The project’s dissemination actions will secure increased stakeholder and public awareness. It is expected that 50 people from NGOs, 100 researchers, 100 personnel of other related environmental stakeholders (e.g. Forest Directorates, Forest Service, Hellenic Agricultural Organization Demeter), will become aware of the project.
