The importance of biodiversity
Biological diversity or biodiversity refers to the variety of existing life forms, «embracing» all life on the Planet: plants, animals and microorganisms, the genes they contain, the ecosystem types that they form.
Biodiversity is the basis of human existence, our well-being and economy.
Everything related to our lifestyle, our health, culture and recreational activities relies on the products and services provided by nature.
The Biodiversity of Greece
Greece is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, hosting an incredible variety of ecosystems and species.
The biological wealth of Greece is among the greatest in Europe and the Mediterranean.
Greece is a country with:
- valuable natural heritage and important biological diversity,
- high species density and
- an impressive mosaic of terrestrial, wetland and marine ecosystems.
The Greek flora has about 5,700 recorded species, of which approximately 13.2% (750 species) are endemic.
The Greek fauna includes about 23,130 recorded species of terrestrial and freshwater animals as well as 3,500 marine species
Protected areas in Greece
Protected areas concern those that are primarily dedicated to the protection of the natural and cultural heritage and host the most unique, sensitive and valuable elements of our natural wealth.
These areas are governed by a special institutional regime based on national, European and international legislation.
For the effective protection of Greek nature, Greece has established national parks, wildlife refuges, protected landscapes and protected natural formations, while it has included areas in the Natura 2000 network (based on the Wildbirds’ Directive 2009/147 and Habitats’ Directive 1992 /43) and has also defined areas of protection based on international conventions.
The LIFE EL BIOS Main Expected Outcomes
Monitoring biodiversity is essential for its protection and conservation.
Biodiversity data is a cornerstone in the effort to halt biodiversity loss and reverse ecosystem degradation.
The LIFE EL-BIOS
is a project that aims to facilitate the Management & Conservation of National Biodiversity, through the development of an innovative tool for Greece’s biodiversity
